From left to right: H18 heading east with an Operation Lifesaver C40-9W; a Loram Railgrinder grinds track 2 at the east end of Front Street; an S8K coal train with an SD70M-2 in the lead passes the now-gone position-light signals at MP41.6.

Marietta is located just north of Columbia on route 441.  The railroad itself runs along Front Street.  There is a set of signals just norht of town (421E & 422W) as well as two defect detectors, one of which is brand new.  The new one is located at the west (north) end of Front Street, and was put into service in the fall of 2006.  The other detector is located a few miles west at milepost EP44.1. There is plenty of accessible track through town, with four small grade crossings in town (some of which are marked "private").  Unfortunately, a line of trees separate the railroad right-of-way from Front Street, so photo angles are pretty tight. Also on front street is the Railroad House Inn, a restored bed & breakfast that used to be a hotel for canal and railroad workers.

From left to right: An ex-Conrail SD60 leads H18 over Vinegar Ferry Road; H23 backs down the Marietta Industrial; HV25 couples up to a few grain hoppers at the Perdue transloading facility.

A few miles north of Marietta is another spot to view the action.  From Marietta, head north on 441.  After you pass the large Armstrong ceiling factory, turn left onto Vinegar Ferry Road.  This takes you down to Riverfront Park, which has a boat ramp and a picnic pavilion. The Port Road crosses over the road on a small stone arch bridge.  This is the exact location of the 44.1 detector.  Before you go under the Port Road, you will cross another set of tracks.  This line is the Marietta Industrial track, which joins the Port Road a mile or so west at SHOCKS. The small unloading facility here is used by Perdue Chicken. I am uncertain as to whether or not Armstrong is still serviced.  A local freight usually works the industrial on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning.
